Colours are like words to me – the abstract

Colours are like words to me – the abstract ‘Art is a lie that makes us realise the truth’, Picasso     The most challenging aspect to creating an abstract painting is finding the inspiration to create an original and inspired work of art, after all without inspiration an artist has nothing.   Painting in the abstract genre can be particularly challenging because to create an abstract piece, in either a 2D or 3D form, challenges my creative thinking the most. By definition abstract art does not depict a person, place or thing in the natural world, even in an extremely distorted or exaggerated way.  The subject of the work...

I AM …….

I AM ……. Powerful women with a story, a history, a journey, are at the core of my new series of paintings … ‘I AM’   –  Two of the most powerful words because what you put after them shapes your reality.     Bevan Lee      These two very small, powerful words resonated with me. Usually the negative brain kicks in and words like ‘not enough’ or ‘unloved’ steal the limelight.  But what if I filled that little gap with words like ‘beautiful’ or ‘complete’ or even ‘goddess’?   Step aside negative mind and let the positive mind through. It was in that moment this series of powerful women...

Encaustic Wax and Cold Wax Media paintings

Encaustic Wax and Cold Wax Media paintings I absolutely love working with encaustic and cold wax when creating my abstract paintings as they both have different ways of finding texture and movement within the media. Each layer of the encaustic media is fused using a heat dryer (or iron) which creates some awesome effects and then I add a little gold leaf powder or gold leaf for some extra lushness. I usually work with around 7 layers – making the finished painting undeniably very tactile indeed. Cold wax is worked into the painting without heat but can also create some wonderful layered finishes. I make my own encaustic wax...

Contemporary Seascapes

Contemporary Seascapes The magnificent oceans cover over 70% of our planet earth’s surface and control our daily weather systems.  Full of energy and mystery, from the gentle rolling of the waves to the to the power of the tsunami, filled with tropical corals, unusual sea creatures and deep mysteries. Do you ever wonder what is out there, deep in the dark underwater worlds, surviving the cold and hiding from the weather?  I love watching the sea and taking its energy within, but respect the power it has to change dramatically when nature dictates.  The source of inspiration it contains for an artist is...

Spanish Landscapes

Spanish Landscapes The Spanish Landscape is continually changing. Whether it be the magnificent sunlight influencing the colours as they bounce onto the hills or the seasons as they change so dramatically.  Every day can bring a new and wonderful challenge to the artist as the study of the landscape is ever-changing, by season, month, day or hour. This gallery of abstract and semi abstract landscape paintings have been painted during the different seasons usually  ‘en plein air’ or from studies which I then work on back in the studio on to large canvases.  Thank you for visiting my Spanish...
